Summary:
UPDATE: THIS PROPERTY HAS BEEN SOLD!
Copper mineralization related to the Cretaceous quartz monzonite to diorite Lorna Stock is widespread. Reconnaissance soil sampling gave anomalous values (200 to 1,300 ppm Cu – 14 samples) along a 4 km strike length.
Location and Access:
The Lorn property is located 190 km north of Vancouver,British Columbia, and approximately 30 km ESE of the south end of Lower Taseko Lake, at 51o 6’ N latitude and 123o 10’ W longitude. Access is by fixed wing float aircraft or helicopter. The property is located between Barrick’s Poison Mountain (40 km E) and Taseko’s Prosperity (50 km N) porphyry deposits.
Description:
Mineralization within the Lorna Stock consists of disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, with local molybdenite. The adjacent volcanic rocks contain disseminated and fracture controlled pyrite, pyrrhotite and local chalcopyrite mineralization. Copper mineralization is widespread. Reconnaissance soil sampling gave anomalous values (200 to 1,300 ppm Cu – 14 samples) along a 4 km strike length. Chip sampling (not continuous) by Cominco from three separate areas within the intrusive returned 0.28% Cu over 2,120 ft. (647 m), including 1.17% Cu over 30 ft. (9.2 m) and 1.15% Cu over 200 ft. (61 m); 0.21% Cu over 1,660 ft. (506 m); and 0.40% Cu over 450 ft. (137 m). The author of the technical report noted that these numbers are not representative, as they were from chip samples from discontinuous outcrop exposures. However, the author indicated that they are a good qualitative guide to the mineralization present and that the zones were open along strike.
Geology:
The property is underlain by the partially exposed Upper Cretaceous quartz monzonite to diorite Lorna stock which intrudes sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Upper Jurassic to Cretaceous Kingsvale Group. The stock is exposed as a cupola in a north-south trending valley, in contact with Kingsvale andesitic volcanic rocks which form the ridges on either side of the valley and in the cirque to the south. The contact is marked by a prominent gossan formed from the oxidation of iron-rich minerals, primarily pyrite, from the hornfels zone in the andesitic volcanics.
History:
- 1973 – Discovered and prospected by Phelps Dodge (no records available)
- 1969 – Prospected and trenched by Burlington Mines
- 1971 to 1974 – Prospected, mapped, sampled and 1,490 ft. (704 m) of core drilling in 5 holes by Cominco.
