POSITION: Manager, Technical Services

REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION

We are seeking an experienced engineering professional with strong managerial skills who has a high degree of technical competence demonstrated within the mining sector. Well-rounded functionally, this individual will be responsible for leading and managing the technical design work as well as the Engineering Department. The incumbent will be responsible for various aspects of occupational health and safety, environmental matters, over which the role has control and accountability, including adherence to all policies of DMC Mining Services. The successful candidate must have strong communication skills and the ability to work well with others.  Travel to and from job sites is required depending on project scope. The Manager, Technical Services is a member of the DMC Mining Services Senior Management Team.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in the planning and creation of drawings and designs involving detailed analysis and design of structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, masonry, and timber and building systems. Determine structural specifications, materials, equipment and scope. Investigate and resolve problems as they relate to structural engineering and create unique designs and concepts to handle difficult engineering demands. Support management in developing and sustaining an environment that supports policies and programs to make DMC a top employer with the best safety record amongst its peers.
  • Write and understand technical documents and detailed proposals.
  • Participate or lead in structural audits, evaluates condition of existing structures, and assesses requirements for repair and rehabilitation. Conduct site visits, liaise with clients and site personnel as required.
  • Delegate workload to subordinates, determine priorities, provides advice and assistance as required. Develops technical expertise of assigned staff and assists personnel in other disciplines in achieving objectives.
  • Evaluate and review engineering work before released.
  • Plans and manages projects and/or programs. Writes (or discusses) project/program plan(s), recommendation(s) and/or finding(s).
  • Participates in the selection of consulting engineers, oversees and reviews their work product.
  • Responsible for managing their staff, including: monitoring performance including day to day coaching and providing performance feedback, performance appraisals, and initiating disciplinary action if required (including maintaining notes/documentation required to support).

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE

  • A minimum of 10 year’s industry experience, leading and motivated a team of engineering professionals to new levels of performance. Ideally, experience with large multi-national industries such as mining/metals, oil/gas and heavy civil/construction is preferred.
  • Experience with Mine Shaft Sinking would be an asset.
  • Possess an undergraduate degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • A registered Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) in the Province of Ontario.
  • Masters in Business Administration (MBA) or a Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is an asset.
  • Have intimate knowledge of ACAD or comparable structural and project design software.
  • Exceptional communication skills with progressive supervisory and management experience with the ability to manage projects and personnel both onsite and offsite.
  • Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
