Dominion’s Jay Project Receives Approval Recommendation

February 02, 16 by David Brummer

(IDEX Online News) – Dominion Diamond Corporation has reported that its Jay Project has been recommended for approval, following a consultation by the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board (MVEIR).

The review board recommended approval based on several conditions being met to “prevent significant adverse impacts on the environment and mitigate the causes of public concern,” according to its ruling.

The stipulated measures to be addressed included minimizing the harmful impact to wildlife, particularly caribou, ensuring clean and safe water once the Jay and Misery pits close and a commitment to be socially aware and responsible to local Aboriginal communities.

The project is an expansion of the Ekati Diamond Mine, including the development of a horseshoe dike in Lac du Sauvage to expose the proposed open pit, transport of ore trucks along a 30 kilometer stretch along the proposed Jay Road and the procession of ore found there at the existing Ekati site.

“Dominion thanks the MVEIRB for their work on the project and looks forward to a timely decision by the Minister. We would also like to thank all the communities for their active interest and participation throughout the environmental assessment process,” said Dominion Diamond’s CEO Brendan Bell.
