LONDON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Technavio analysts forecast the global zeolite market to grow at a CAGR of close to 8% during the forecast period, according to their latest report.
The research study covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global zeolite market for 2016-2020. The report also segments the zeolite market by type into main categories which are natural and synthetic, of which natural zeolite accounted for 62% of the market in 2015.
Technavio chemicals and materials analysts highlight the following three factors that are contributing to the growth of the global zeolite market:
- Increasing use of zeolite as refrigeration adsorbents
- Growth in refinery industry
- Rising demand for zeolites as builders in laundry detergents
Increasing use of zeolite as refrigeration adsorbents
Refrigeration adsorption systems generally use zeolite to provide cooling. Adsorption refrigerators that use water as refrigerant and zeolite as an adsorber have been advancing since 2013. Awareness about refrigeration for food preservation is increasing in developing countries. The acceptance of zeolite-based adsorption refrigeration systems is increasing significantly, particularly in rural areas that are prone to frequent power outages, and where conventional refrigeration systems are not affordable. These systems can operate over a wide range of temperatures and do not corrode the cooling equipment, thus proving efficient. Further, the mineral is non-flammable, non-poisonous, and available naturally.
“Adsorption refrigeration systems are becoming popular because they can be stimulated by low thermal energy and employ refrigerants that do not emit chlorofluorocarbons, a prime cause of ozone layer depletion and global warming,” says Chandrakumar Badala Jaganathan, a lead analyst at Technavio for metals and minerals research.
Growth in refinery industry
Oil is the primary source of energy currently, and it will be so during the succeeding decades as potential alternatives to crude oil are still being studied. The widespread acceptance of oils as energy sources can be attributed to the R&D programs that have advanced the oil refining and petrochemistry significantly.
Zeolites are used as catalysts in oil refining due to their extraordinary efficiency of oil refining, cheaper cost, and ease of customization for specialized applications. Zeolite catalysts have been the basis for increasing the yield of gasoline and octane. These catalysts also aid in the production of cleaner fuels and lubricants with improved performance properties. Zeolite Y has remained a major component in chemical processes like FCC since the 1970s as it provides greater gasoline yield with the greatest degree of catalytic stability. Chemical processes such as fuel conditioning (employed in fuel management and purification) also require zeolites.
Rising demand for zeolites as builders in laundry detergents
The ban on sodium triphosphate as a building agent for laundry detergent has paved the way for the establishment of non-toxic and eco-friendly alternatives as potential substitutes. Zeolites are among the prime category of products that can be preferred as builders in the production of laundry detergents.
Superior product stability, irrespective of the specific process employed (extrusion, spray drying, and granulation), inertness when exposed to higher temperatures, and alkalinity or mechanical effects are a few noteworthy advantages of zeolites over conventional builders.
Further, zeolites have not been reported to cause decomposition or chemical change when treated with different layered silicates or sodium triphosphate during the production process. This makes zeolites predominantly flexible materials for producing laundry detergents. “Therefore, the majority of the demand for zeolite is generated from detergents because of its water-softening features and ionizing properties,” says Chandrakumar.
