Geotech is a privately owned company incorporated in 1981, with corporate headquarters and research and development facility in Aurora, Ontario, Canada. The company specializes in airborne geophysical survey mapping, data processing and data interpretation.
Geotech’s founder, Ed Morrison, was born in Sudbury, Ontario and studied Electrical Engineering at McGill University before working for International Nickel Company, McPhar Geophysics and Barringer Research. Morrison founded Geotech Ltd. in 1978 from a small office in Markham, Ontario; the company was incorporated in 1981.
In the early 1980s, Geotech developed the Through Ice Bathymetry System (TIBS) for the Canadian Coast Guard to measure salt water depth below sea ice and pioneered the world’s first airborne ice thickness technology. The early 1990s saw the launch of the Hawk fixed-wing EM and Hummingbird frequency domain electromagnetic (FDEM) systems. In 2000, Geotech built the first VTEM™ Time Domain system with unique design, large loop, higher power and bucking coil. In 2001, the company shifted focus from instrumentation to data collection for the commercial survey business. In 2002, Geotech developed and patented the first airborne audio frequency magnetics (AFMAG) system, which became the ZTEM™ system in 2005, described as the first new airborne technology introduced in many years.
In 2012, Geotech acquired Aeroquest International Limited and all of its subsidiaries: Aeroquest Mapcon (Canada), Geophex (US), UTS Geophysics (Australia), and Aeroquest Airborne. Aeroquest International Limited officially amalgamated with Geotech in 2014.
Geotech operates on a global scale with partnerships and resources around the world. The company operates more than 20 aircraft piloted by independent pilots from around the world. Every year, Geotech invests more than 2 million dollars in research and development. The company holds patents worldwide for the exclusive designs of the VTEM™ and ZTEM™ systems. Geotech is described as the world’s largest privately owned geophysics company.
