Sandvik is a global, high-tech engineering group providing solutions that enhance productivity, profitability and sustainability for the manufacturing, mining and infrastructure industries. The company’s offerings cover the entire customer value chain and are based on extensive investments in research and development, customer insights and deep knowledge of industrial processes and digital solutions.

Sandvik has world-leading positions in equipment and tools, service, digital solutions and sustainability-driving technologies for the mining and infrastructure industries, such as automated and electric mining equipment and eco-efficient rock processing. The company also provides metal-cutting tools, tooling systems and digital solutions driving higher efficiency and automation in component manufacturing, as well as industrial metrology technologies and metal powder.

The company was founded in 1862 by Göran Fredrik Göransson, who was first in the world to succeed in using the Bessemer method for steel production on an industrial scale. At an early stage, operations focused on high quality and added value, investments in research and development, close contact with customers, and exports. This strategy has remained unchanged through the years. As early as the 1860s, the product range included drill steel for rock-drilling. The company listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1901. Manufacturing of stainless steel began in 1921 and cemented carbide in 1942. Production of cemented-carbide tools began in the 1950s in Gimo, Sweden. In 1972, the company name was changed to Sandvik AB, and in 1984, a new type of organization was introduced with a parent company and separate business areas.

Sandvik’s business model is based on close customer cooperation where it creates value through products and solutions contributing to enhanced productivity and sustainability. Together with customers, Sandvik drives innovation and digitalization to unlock large-scale value, improve operations, create safer operating conditions and achieve more with less. The company is focused on advancing the world through engineering, continuously developing both customer offerings and core competencies by adding new digital technologies. The business model generates value for employees and society, which together with large customer value ultimately leads to shareholder value.

In August 2022, the business area Sandvik Materials Technology became the standalone listed company Alleima. Today, Sandvik’s operations are concentrated on equipment and tools, service, digital solutions and sustainability-driving technologies for the mining and infrastructure industries, such as automated and electric mining equipment and eco-efficient rock processing, as well as cutting tools, tooling systems and digital solutions driving higher efficiency and automation in component manufacturing, in-line metrology technologies and metal powder.

Sandvik has a decentralized organization with operations conducted in four business areas, each having several divisions with responsibility for research and development, production and sales of their respective products and services. An established governance framework including Group policies, Group procedures and other steering documentation governs the way the company conducts its business. The whole organization shares the same purpose and values.
