Sherritt is a Canadian-based company with a legacy spanning over 95 years, incorporated as Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited in 1927 to develop resources, principally base metals. The company is a world leader in mining and refining nickel and cobalt with an unparalleled history of innovation and expertise in hydrometallurgical processes.

Sherritt operates through a 50% ownership in the Moa Joint Venture, a vertically integrated operation that includes mining in Moa, Cuba and refining in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. The Moa Joint Venture is a 50/50 partnership with General Nickel Company S.A. Of Cuba established in 1994. The mining operation extracts lateritic ore which is processed into mixed sulphide precipitate (MSP) containing nickel and cobalt; the MSP is then transported to Fort Saskatchewan for refining. The Moa Joint Venture currently produces approximately 32 thousand tonnes of high purity nickel and cobalt per annum. Following a 2025 expansion program, production capacity at the Moa Joint Venture was increased.

Sherritt’s products are sold worldwide except in the United States. As a by-product of the refining process, Sherritt produces agriculture fertilizer for sale in Western Canada through its wholly-owned fertilizer business, which also produces sulphuric acid and ammonia on site in Fort Saskatchewan.

Through one-third ownership in Energas S.A., Sherritt operates power-generating facilities in Cuba. Energas operates two combined cycle plants with electrical generating capacity of 506 MW that produce electricity for the Cuban power grid from one of the lowest carbon emitting sources of power in Cuba. In 2022, Cuba’s Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers approved a twenty-year extension of Energas’ joint venture generation contract with the Cuban government to March 2043.

Sherritt is recognized as a leader in the production of high purity nickel and cobalt from lateritic ore. The company has leveraged 70 years of experience in evaluating, developing and commercializing process technologies for natural resource-based industries. Sherritt’s proprietary ammonia pressure leach (HPAL) hydrometallurgical technology has been licensed to more than 40 mining operations worldwide across base and precious metals segments. The company’s history of innovation includes the discovery and first commercial production of refined nickel directly from laterite ores at the Marinduque-Sherritt Surigao nickel laterite project on Dinagat Island in the Philippines in 1974.

Sherritt maintains research and development focused on next-generation laterite processing technology, treatment of complex copper and precious metals concentrates, and expansion of midstream processing capacity for critical minerals through development of a mixed hydroxide sulphate (MHP) Project to produce nickel and cobalt sulphates for the electric vehicle battery supply chain.
