Sturtevant Inc. has manufactured size reduction and air classification equipment since 1883. Founded by Thomas L. Sturtevant to improve equipment effectiveness and operator safety in the milling industry, the company designed the Mechanical Den and Excavator to limit human exposure to harmful fumes in fertilizer manufacturing. During the late 1800s, Laurance H. Sturtevant and Thomas J. Sturtevant, an MIT graduate and engineer, joined the firm. T.J. Sturtevant’s design talents, coupled with engineering skills, led to development of the Air Separator in the early 1900s. In 1930, a Sturtevant unit proved superior in a contest for a major cement producer, and for several decades the closed circuit method of making cement using Sturtevant Air Separators became dominant. During World War II, Sturtevant Inc. participated in the defense effort by making parts for local naval yards and secured materials for the chemical industries. The company introduced the Micronizer ultrafine grinder in the 1930s, opening new markets for fluid energy milling. In 1973, Sturtevant Inc. acquired the North Attleboro Foundry in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. In 1979, the Processing Division was instituted to function as research and development and provide specialized grinding services. During the 1980s, the company developed the SD High Efficiency Classifier, which reduced power consumption, produced higher yields, and was variable to produce different grades of product from a single milling circuit.

Sturtevant Inc. has maintained a tradition of family management from its founding to the present, currently in its fifth generation. The company has one of the world’s largest bases of installed mills and air classifiers, with equipment in virtually every country in the world and offices or representation on all continents. The Micronizer line now includes the world’s first USDA-accepted jet mill, the 2002 Qualification Micronizer, and newer developments. The Air Separator line includes a superfine variant and another new technology yet to be unveiled. The Powderizer line has recently been awarded another patent.
