Evolution Mining (ASX: EV1) has released the results from its latest natural graphite test work at the Chilalo Deposit in Tanzania, signaling potential advancements for the project. The announcement, dated September 2, 2026, highlights the promising nature of the test work conducted, though it stops short of detailing specific grades and tonnages. As the company continues to focus on graphite extraction, these results could play a pivotal role in positioning Evolution Mining within the competitive graphite market.
Chilalo’s Resource Potential and Historical Context
The Chilalo graphite project, located in southeastern Tanzania, has been identified as a high-grade resource with significant potential. According to previous company filings, the project boasts a resource estimate of 20.1 million tonnes (Mt) at 9.9% total graphitic carbon (TGC), translating to approximately 1,991 kilotonnes (Kt) of contained graphite. This substantial resource underpins the strategic importance of the Chilalo Deposit for Evolution Mining’s growth ambitions.
Historically, the project has seen a series of successful explorations. Between 2022 and 2023, reverse circulation (RC) drilling identified new graphite discoveries east of the mining license, with the Chilalo East area confirmed over a 1.6km strike length. Subsequent drilling further expanded the deposit’s potential, uncovering another significant discovery through an 11-hole, 5,440-meter program.
Advancements in Graphite Processing
Evolution Mining has made notable strides in processing technologies to enhance the quality of graphite extracted from Chilalo. Prior test work indicated that thermal purification methods could achieve a 99.9995 wt% carbon purity level before milling and shaping, while basic flotation tests averaged a 95.9% TGC concentrate grade. These processing advancements are crucial as the company aims to meet the stringent quality demands of the battery and electronics industries.
More recently, partnerships and collaborations have bolstered Chilalo’s standing. The BTR New Material Group’s battery anode and lithium-ion battery testwork yielded a product with a capacity of 363.9 milliampere-hours per gram (mAh/g) and an initial efficiency of 94.7%. Additionally, the company reported that its STREAMS program successfully upgraded Chilalo’s concentrate from 95.7% total graphitic carbon to 99.99% carbon through thermal purification.
Strategic Implications for Evolution Mining
The latest results from Chilalo’s natural graphite test work are a testament to Evolution Mining’s ongoing commitment to advancing its graphite assets. With the project being fully permitted and Evolution holding an 84% interest—complemented by a 16% free-carried interest held by the Tanzanian government through Kudu Graphite/Ngwena Tanzania arrangements—the company is strategically positioned to capitalize on the rising demand for high-grade graphite.
As the global economy continues its transition towards renewable energy and electrification, the demand for graphite, particularly in battery applications, is expected to surge. Evolution Mining’s ability to produce high-purity graphite positions it well within this burgeoning market, potentially leading to increased investor interest and strategic partnerships.
Looking ahead, Evolution Mining’s focus on optimizing extraction and processing techniques at Chilalo will likely play a critical role in enhancing its competitive edge. The company may continue to explore further drilling opportunities to expand its resource base, while also leveraging its processing advancements to cater to the evolving needs of the battery and electronics sectors.
