Surge Battery Metals Inc. has announced the results of a pre-feasibility study (PFS) for its Nevada North Lithium Project, located in Elko County, Nevada. The study, reported on October 2, 2026, indicates promising financial metrics, including an after-tax net present value (NPV) of US$9.81 billion at an 8% discount rate and an impressive after-tax internal rate of return (IRR) of 23.6%. The project’s operating cost is estimated at US$4,719 per tonne of lithium carbonate, positioning it competitively in the growing lithium market.
Project Development and Resource Expansion
The Nevada North Lithium Project is held by Nevada North Lithium LLC, with Surge owning a 67.5% stake and maintaining management control, while Evolution Mining holds the remaining 32.5% interest. The PFS was executed under the leadership of Fluor, with contributions from Kemetco, IMC, and Call & Nicholas. Originally announced in 2024, the PFS was targeted for completion by the fourth quarter of 2026.
Before the study, the project’s pit-constrained inferred resource was 8.65 million tonnes of lithium-carbonate equivalent (LCE), grading 2,955 parts per million (ppm) lithium at a 1,250-ppm cutoff. Following an extensive nine-hole drilling program totaling 4,634.5 feet, Surge reported an updated inferred resource of 11.24 million tonnes LCE, grading 3,010 ppm lithium at the same cutoff. This represents a significant 30% increase in contained LCE, showcasing the potential scalability of the project.
Financial Backing and Future Plans
Evolution Mining’s C$10 million funding commitment underpinned the PFS, providing the necessary capital without diluting Surge’s shareholders. The study supports Surge’s transition to a direct feasibility study and further permitting activities, which are critical steps in advancing the project toward production. An accompanying NI 43-101 technical report is anticipated to provide more detailed validation of the PFS results.
The study outlines a two-phase development strategy with an initial capital requirement of US$2.77 billion, including a US$442 million contingency, followed by a second phase expansion capital of US$2.35 billion. This phased approach mitigates financial risk while allowing for scalable growth as market conditions evolve.
Industry Context and Implications
The lithium market is experiencing robust demand due to the accelerating adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage solutions. Surge’s Nevada North project, with its favorable economics and significant resource base, places the company in a strong position to capitalize on this demand. The project’s competitive operating costs and substantial NPV underscore its potential to deliver long-term value to stakeholders.
Moreover, the project’s progression aligns with the broader trend of increased investment in domestic lithium production within the United States. As geopolitical concerns and supply chain vulnerabilities prompt countries to secure local sources of critical minerals, projects like Nevada North are becoming increasingly vital to strategic national interests.
Looking ahead, Surge Battery Metals’ strategic focus on advancing the Nevada North Lithium Project could position it as a key player in the North American lithium supply chain. As the company moves towards a feasibility study and subsequent permitting, the project’s potential contributions to the regional economy and the global lithium market will be closely monitored by industry stakeholders.
