Avalon Advanced Materials Inc. (TSX: AVL; OTCQB: AVLNF) has announced a substantial update to the mineral resource estimate for its wholly-owned Nechalacho Rare Earth Elements Project located in the Northwest Territories, Canada. This updated estimate, which is the first since the 2013 definitive feasibility study (DFS), reveals significant changes in the resource composition, particularly an increase in inferred resources by more than double, highlighting the potential for expanded production capabilities in the region’s rare earth elements sector.
Key Details of the Updated Resource Estimate
The updated resource estimate for the Nechalacho project’s Basal Zone reports a total of 58.6 million tonnes in measured and indicated resources and 130.6 million tonnes in inferred resources. This marks a notable increase, with the inferred resources more than doubling compared to the previous assessment conducted in 2013. The update was prepared under Subpart 1300 of Regulation S-K, with an effective date noted as July 14, 2026. It is based on extensive drilling data from 582 drill holes totaling approximately 120,000 meters.
When comparing the current figures to the 2013 DFS, the measured and indicated resource has decreased by 14%, but the overall global contained resource has increased by 42%. This is attributed primarily to the significant leap in inferred resources. The cut-off grade used for this estimate stands at US$366.40 per tonne net metallurgical return, which is 14% higher than the cut-off used in the 2013 study.
Implications for the Rare Earth Market
The significant increase in inferred resources at Nechalacho’s Basal Zone suggests a potentially transformative impact on the North American rare earth supply chain. Rare earth elements are critical in numerous high-tech applications, including electric vehicles, wind turbines, and various electronics, and the demand for these elements is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. As such, Avalon’s updated resource estimate positions the company to capitalize on this growing demand.
The project in the Northwest Territories is particularly noteworthy as it is one of the few rare earth element projects outside of China with the potential to supply significant quantities of both light and heavy rare earth elements. This enhances Avalon’s strategic importance in the global rare earth market, which is currently dominated by Chinese production.
Strategic Developments and Future Prospects
Avalon has indicated that the updated resource estimate will serve as a cornerstone for further technical work, with a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) expected by fall 2026. The company is focused on updating the project’s prior DFS-level foundation, with plans for underground access below 150 meters to tap into the Basal Zone resources.
The previous feasibility study suggested that the Basal Zone could produce approximately 9,300 tonnes of total rare earth oxides (TREO) annually over a 20-year mine life, with a post-tax net present value (NPV) of $1.3 billion at an 8% discount rate. The updated resource figures may well alter these projections, potentially increasing the project’s viability and attractiveness to investors and stakeholders.
Avalon’s commitment to advancing the Nechalacho project aligns with broader industry trends aimed at diversifying supply chains and reducing dependency on Chinese rare earths. As the company moves forward with its PEA and subsequent development stages, the Nechalacho project’s expanded resource base is likely to attract significant attention from both industry players and investors seeking to align with sustainable and secure supply solutions.
Looking ahead, Avalon’s progress at Nechalacho could play a pivotal role in reshaping the rare earth landscape in North America. With the updated resource estimate confirming a larger-than-anticipated resource base, Avalon is well-positioned to leverage this asset in the evolving global market dynamics over the coming years.
