Santos Ltd (ASX: STO) has announced a significant milestone in its Barossa gas project, with the successful marketing, sale, and loading of the first condensate cargo. The shipment, approximately 300,000 barrels of condensate, was loaded from the BW Opal FPSO on July 24, 2026, and is en route to SK Incheon Petrochem in South Korea aboard the Aframax tanker Boccadesse. This marks the first condensate export from the Barossa project, located roughly 285 km north of Darwin. Santos jointly marketed this cargo with PRISM Energy International Australia.
Project Timeline and Investments
The Barossa project has been a significant focus for Santos since its sanctioning in March 2021. Initially, the project targeted first gas delivery in the first half of 2025. According to Santos’ 2021 annual report, the project was 20% complete by the end of that year. By February 2025, progress had reached 91%, with three of four production wells drilled and completed, keeping the project on track for Q3 2025 gas production.
In June 2025, the BW Opal FPSO arrived at the field, and five out of six wells were drilled. The completion of the 262 km gas export pipeline and the 123 km Darwin Pipeline Duplication was also announced. By this point, expenditures on the project had reached approximately $3.95 billion, according to a Reuters report, with the venture maintaining its timeline for gas production.
Strategic Importance for Santos and Partners
The Barossa project is pivotal for Santos and its partners, including PRISM Energy International Australia with a 37.5% stake and JERA Australia holding 12.5%. This project is expected to significantly enhance Santos’ production capacity, targeting a plateau production of 80,000 barrels per day gross. The first LNG cargo, loaded in January 2026 and delivered to Japan’s Sakai terminal, further underscores the project’s role in meeting Asia’s robust demand for LNG.
For the year 2025, Santos reported a full-year production of 87.7 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe), a slight increase from 87.1 mmboe in 2024. The successful condensate shipment signals a promising start for further production increases and highlights Santos’ strategic positioning in the LNG market.
Future Prospects and Industry Impact
This project not only enhances Santos’ production portfolio but also strengthens Australia’s position as a leading LNG exporter. The Barossa project, by connecting to the existing Darwin LNG facility, provides an efficient pathway for expanding LNG exports to key Asian markets. Given the strategic importance of LNG in the global energy mix, the project’s success could influence regional energy dynamics by ensuring a steady supply to energy-hungry markets like South Korea and Japan.
With the first oil milestone achieved, industry observers will be closely watching Santos’ next steps as it aims to fully realize Barossa’s production potential. The project’s progress may serve as a benchmark for future LNG developments in the region. As LNG demand continues to grow, projects like Barossa could play a crucial role in shaping the energy landscape in the coming years.
