Survey: Idaho Industrial Employment Rose 2% in the Past Year

EVANSTON, IL–(Marketwired – January 27, 2016) – Manufacturing jobs in Idaho climbed for a fourth straight year, reports the 2016 Idaho Manufacturers Directory®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to MNI’s database, Idaho manufacturers added another 1,515 jobs from November 2014 to November 2015, an increase of 2%.

Idaho is now home to 2,135 manufacturers employing 79,250 workers. MNI reports the state has so far added 5,466 industrial jobs, up 7.5% since November 2011. 

“Many manufacturers choose Idaho for its competitive incentive programs and abundant natural resources, and its business costs are among the lowest in the nation,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, the state still struggles from a shortage of skilled workers.”

MNI reports employment gains were led by the industrial machinery sector, which increased 1.3% over the year. The industrial machinery sector accounts for the most Idaho manufacturing jobs, employing 16,188. 

Other industrial sectors reporting gains included medical instruments/related products, up 15%; fabricated metals, up 11%; transportation equipment, up 5%; chemicals, up 4.3%; rubber/plastics, up 2.8%; and textiles, up 2.3%.

MNI’s regional data shows Southwest Idaho accounted for the largest share of gains, with jobs up 2.6% to its current level of 45,065 workers. Industrial employment in the state’s Northern region rose 2.4% to 17,419 jobs, but declined 1.8% to 16,768 jobs in Southeast Idaho. 

Manufacturing jobs in Boise rose 6.7% over the year to 22,791 jobs. Industrial employment climbed 6.47% in Lewiston; climbed 2.9% in Idaho Falls and 2.7% in Nampa, according to MNI data.
