The Queen of the Hills mine has a long and very detailed history. First production and work was done in 1870-1890. According to the MRDS report: "host reported as diorite from the Beltain Series, Hasmark formation, associated with granite intrusion. selected dump sample assayed .3 Au oz/tn, .43 Ag oz/tn. N-NW trending faults. Ore body strikes N42E. Barite is abundant near NE part of vein. No production records found but workings indicate probable production. underground depth 60 m. 200' vertical shaft with 760' adit intersecting bottom (caved in 1950s) stopes extend 80' on each side of shaft. open pit mined recently (1974). vein was mined along strike for 250' an apparently barre, parallel vein is exposed 190' SE. Quartz veins occur enclosed in foliated granitic rock." What you see is what you get today. This mine sorely needs to be re-opened. If the dump has .3 of gold and .43 of silver, its only logic that there is much, much more inside. The buildings and cabins outside are in excellent condition and would only require minimal rehab to get to livable. This is a great spot for someone with a little initiative.

The Queen of the Hills mine was purchased for $75,000 by Charles W. Clark and E. L. Whitmore of Butte in 1900. The partners hired about 50 men to develop the property as a gold mine and construct a 10-stamp mill. In 1902 the mine and mill was acquired by the Tombstone Mining Company but there is no record that the mine ever produced any significant amounts of paying ore. Other than sporadic small-scale work by lessees, little further mining activity occurred in the district for the next two decades (Sassman 1941; Geach 1972; Winchell 1914).
