Barrick (Niugini) Limited (BNL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea, and operates the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province on behalf of the Porgera Joint Venture partners. BNL is an independently managed company and is jointly owned through an equal partnership between Barrick Gold and Zijin Mining Group. The Porgera Gold Mine employs over 2,500 Papua New Guineans, and over the life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea’s total annual exports.

Position Objective

We seek to appoint an experienced Open Pit Project Geologist to join the Porgera Team reporting directly to the Senior Open Pit Geologist. The Open Pit Project Geologist will be responsible for ensuring high standards of OP grade control practice. They are expected to provide OP geological data to the Mining Department for mine design and production planning in an accurate and timely manner, train Mine Geologists and help build and improve grade control systems and procedures.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Monitor open pit geology systems and performance measures and formulate alternatives and improvements to systems and methods

  • Assist in supervision, training and coaching of Geologists, Graduates and technicians

  • Compile geological data and prepare daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly Geology reports 

  • Assist with implementation of operational and change management initiatives

  • Design, implement and manage OP geological functions including BH drilling, RC drilling, DD Drilling, sampling and reconciliation

  • Prepare measured resource models for mining and Grade Control purposes

     

    To be suitable for this role, you will possess the following:

     

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in open pit gold operations preferably within a project role.

  • Tertiary qualifications in Geology.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of 3D modelling software packages – MineSight preferred

  • Proven experience in interpretation and estimation of geological and assay data

  • Working knowledge of Adamtech mapping software is desirable.

  • Proven experience in drill and blast mine design

  • Previous experience working in PNG or other developing countries, desirable

  • Well organised and highly motivated.

  • Able to work as part of a team and foster team building.

  • Proven experience in a supervisory role in a relative technical area

  • The ability and willingness to train and develop national employees

  • Current Drivers Licence

     

    Your primary location will be the Porgera Mine Site. An on-travel allowance will be provided to candidates who reside outside of Cairns, Australia. Alternatively the Company will provide assistance as per BNL Relocation Policy to relocate the successful candidate to Cairns, Australia if the candidate holds a current visa to reside in Australia. The roster for this role is a fly in, fly out rotation on 16 days on, 12 days off.
