Barrick (Niugini) Limited (BNL) is a company incorporated in Papua New Guinea, and operates the Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province on behalf of the Porgera Joint Venture partners. BNL is an independently managed company and is jointly owned through an equal partnership between Barrick Gold and Zijin Mining Group. The Porgera Gold Mine employs over 2,500 Papua New Guineans, and over the life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea’s total annual exports.

We seek to appoint a highly experienced Senior Metallurgist responsible for the application and monitoring of metallurgical systems in the Porgera process operation, including project development and execution, providing technical guidance and mentoring. The Senior Metallurgist will report direct to the Metallurgy Superintendent.

  • Monitoring and ensuring the safe operation of the processing plant is achieved through control and optimisation of the processing plant comprising of Crushing, Grinding, Floatation, Acid Pressure Oxidation (utilising 4 autoclaves), 3 Oxygen Plants, Lime Kilns, Tailings Detoxification and a leach / CIP circuit.

  • Applying metallurgical systems to achieve planned plant utilisation and recovery targets.  

  • Providing technical training and guidance to the Metallurgy and Operation teams to improve their knowledge and capability to operate the plant more efficiently and safely.

  • Provide technical expertise to the Metallurgy team and challenge the operational norms to identify and achieve continuous improvement in plant performance.

  • Develop and execute Processing plant projects using Project Management Systems for capital, continuous Improvement and future ore projects to ensure project discipline for all projects, be a leader in this area for the Metallurgy and Project teams and to ensure the same discipline by all members of these teams.

  • Collecting and analysing information to assess performance statistics, statutory requirements, systems efficiencies, business improvement and change management initiatives and recommend for systems improvements.

  • Monitoring all stages of the metallurgical process to allow adjustments to process controls to enhance plant performance.

  • Ensuring accurate metallurgical accounting procedures and review metallurgical reporting.

  • Mentoring less experienced members of the Metallurgy Team.

  • Maintaining a high level of health, safety and environmental awareness within the group. 

  • Liaise with key stakeholders including the Mine, Maintenance, etc to plan and forecast for production targets based on business requirement.

     

    To be suitable for this role, you will possess the following:

     

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in all aspects of gold extraction, recovery technology and equipment

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering

  • Membership of AusIMM, or SME, and/or IEPNG

  • The ability and willingness to train and develop national employees;

  • Demonstrated experience in procurement of equipment, materials, consumables and reagent including knowledge of hazardous chemical storage and first aid certification.

  • Proven experience in a supervisory role in relative technical area.

  • Sound knowledge in metallurgical databases and accounting systems.

  • Certificate IV Training and Assessment (preferable).

  • Current Drivers Licence.

     

    Your primary location will be the Porgera Mine Site. An on-travel allowance will be provided to candidates who reside outside of Cairns, Australia. Alternatively the Company will provide assistance as per BNL Relocation Policy to relocate the successful candidate to Cairns, Australia if the candidate holds a current visa to reside in Australia. The roster for this role is a fly in, fly out rotation on 16 days on, 12 days off.
