(IDEX Online News) – ALROSA announced that its first quarter diamond sales surged 70 percent, as the world’s largest rough-gem miner by volume, sold from stockpiles it had built up in 2015, according a report on Bloomberg.com.
The company said that it sold 12.1 million carats of diamonds and received approximately RUB 84.8 billion ($1.3 billion), which represents a 41-percent increase from the 7.1 million carats sold in the last quarter of 2015.
Despite the increase in carats sold, the average sale price of $146 per carat in the first quarter of 2016 was lower than the $166 per carat in the final quarter of 2015.
ALROSA expects to mine between 37 million and 39 million carats of diamonds in 2016, subject to market conditions.
