The Global Resource For Connecting Buyers and Sellers

Annual Sales of Electric and Hybrid Medium and Heavy Duty Buses Are Expected to Exceed 52,000 in 2025, According to Navigant Research

BOULDER, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–A new report from Navigant Research examines the market for medium and heavy duty trucks and buses across 10 powertrain types, with global forecasts for annual sales, through 2035.

The medium and heavy duty vehicle (MHDV) segment represents only a small percentage of the world’s total vehicle population, yet it accounts for a large portion of the total fuel and energy consumed in the road transportation sector. Because of the relatively low average fuel economy and high annual mileage typical of MHDVs, fleet operators are beginning to consider investments in fuel efficiency technologies and alternative fuels. Click to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, global annual electric and hybrid bus sales are expected to grow from just more than 9,000 vehicles in 2016 to 52,000 in 2025.

“The commercial vehicle market adopts new technology much more slowly than the consumer vehicle market, but movement is starting to take place, and there are signs that hybrid, electric, and natural gas powertrains will become increasingly popular over the coming years,” says David Alexander, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “However, the rollout will be far from uniform across vehicle types and geographic locations, as some technologies are better suited to larger vehicles, some are only cost-effective for a low-speed stop-start drive cycle, and because alternative fuel availability is very dependent on locality.”

This report’s accompanying Excel databook provides readers further insight into Navigant Research’s analysis of commercial vehicle markets with the addition of pivot tables and dynamic charts and tables. Overall regional sales volumes, along with 16 geographical regions and vehicle types, are segmented to allow readers to target data of interest.

This report, Transportation Forecast: Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicles, analyzes the global MHDV market by four major categories: medium duty buses, heavy duty buses, medium duty trucks, and heavy duty trucks. Each of these categories is also broken down into 10 powertrain types: conventional gasoline, gasoline hybrid, gasoline plug-in hybrid, conventional diesel, diesel hybrid, diesel plug-in hybrid, battery electric, natural gas, propane, and hydrogen fuel cells. Global market forecasts for annual sales and the number of vehicles in use, segmented by country and powertrain type, extend through 2035.
