EVANSTON, IL–(Marketwired – June 28, 2016) – Manufacturers’ News, Inc. — Manufacturing employment in Indiana rose for a fifth straight year, though at a slower rate than in previous years, reports the 2016 Indiana Manufacturers Directory^®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to MNI’s industrial database, manufacturers in Indiana added 1,451 new jobs between April 2015 and April 2016, or less than one percent.

Indiana’s 9,159 manufacturers employ 574,812 in the state, reports MNI. Since April of 2011, Indiana has added 30,665 jobs, or 5.6%.

“With its abundance of skilled labor, favorable regulatory environment, and top-notch infrastructure, Indiana continues to be a huge draw for manufacturers,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, global competition and a strong dollar has put a dent in growth, with gains not as strong as in previous years.”

According to Manufacturers’ News, employment gains were led by the transportation equipment sector, which climbed 2.7% over the year, and 19% over the past five years, ranking first in the state for industrial employment with 97,057 jobs.

Second-ranked industrial machinery accounts for 74,433 jobs, up 3.7% over the past year, while the third-ranked fabricated metals industry employs 58,149, down 1% over the year.

Most other sectors posted little to no change, reports MNI, apart from printing/publishing, which declined 5.1%, and primary metals, down 2.4%.

MNI’s regional data shows employment gains were spread out across three of Indiana’s six regions, with the Southeast gaining 2.5% to 58,731 jobs; West Central Indiana adding 2.2% to 52,947 workers; and Northeast Indiana gaining one percent to 158,990. Industrial employment in East Central Indiana fell one percent to 143,932, while jobs inched down a half percent in the Southwest to 71,249, and declined 1.3% in the state’s Northwest region to 88,963.

City data collected by MNI shows Indianapolis ranks first in the state for number of manufacturing jobs, with 72,016 workers, down 1.4%. Second-ranked Elkhart accounts for 30,980 jobs, up 1%, while third-ranked Fort Wayne is home to 25,147 workers, with no change reported. Columbus ranks fifth with 15,920 jobs, up 9.3%, and fifth-ranked Evansville accounts for 15,450 industrial jobs, down 5.7%.
