Northam Platinum has temporarily suspended operations at its Zondereinde mine, in Limpopo, following acts of violence and intimidation. One of the mine’s employees had been killed in the town of Northam, located about 20 km from the mine, on Sunday. The assailant and motive for the killing was unknown. Sporadic incidents of intimidation and violence have since spread to the mine, prompting the decision to suspend operations. Northam management was seeking to meet with employee representatives, while security and the South African Police Service were attempting to calm the situation.
