Priority Power Management Celebrates STEM Day at Ursuline Academy of Dallas

MIDLAND, Texas & ARLINGTON, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Priority Power Management, LLC (“PPM”), a Texas-based leading independent energy management and consulting services firm, was pleased to participate in and help celebrate STEM Day at the Ursuline Academy of Dallas.

Ursuline Academy of Dallas celebrated STEM Day on February 24, 2016. Ursuline Academy is a college preparatory school, with an all-girl student body of over 800 young women. The event was intended as “a day for the entire school to experiment, play, create, and discover all of the amazing possibilities available in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” Kevin Yung, P.E., Chief Risk and Development Officer at PPM, was invited to attend and spend the day introducing young students to various aspects of electric utilities.

Mr. Yung, a Registered Professional Engineer with the State of Texas, discussed the challenges associated with siting generation facilities, and routing transmission and distribution facilities from the power plants to the electrical consumers. The students worked in teams, choosing where to locate the electrical infrastructure on boards intended to represent the many facets of rural, industrial, commercial, and residential geographies.

Students were challenged to site a power plant, then choose whether to route transmission and distribution facilities through pristine national parks, residential subdivisions, highly populated urban centers, or agricultural lands. They placed model power plants, transmission towers, and distribution poles at various locations on the project boards, and were asked to explain their decisions.

“It was heartwarming and sometimes humorous to hear the students debate the merits of where and why power plants, transmissions structures, and distribution poles should or should not be located,” said Mr. Yung. “Science, technology, engineering and math are drivers of innovation and play an enormous role in everything we do. Getting students exposed to all of the possibilities that they can one day spearhead was an honor and a privilege. I hope that they left STEM Day wanting to learn more and gain curiosity about everything around them.”
