The country rock at the Adelaide Mine consists of slate and limestone belonging to the Star Peak Triassic formation. The ore is a metasomatic replacement of a limestone layer which is from 50 ft. to 75 ft. thick. The ore minerals are pyrrhotitie, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and a little galena in a gangue of garnet, vesuvianite, diopside, calcite, orthoclase and a little quartz. Veins carrying gold and silver occur in the Triassic Koipato formation west of the Adelaide Mine.

The district was organized in 1866. In 1868 the Golconda Mine was operating an 8-stamp mill. In 1897, the Glasgow and Western Exp. Co. acquired the principal mines, constructed a 12-mile narrow-gage railroad from Golconda to Adelaide and built a concentrating plant and smelter at the junction of the branch with the main line. This plant was operated upon ores from Adelaide and from Battle Mountain for a time, and some matte was produced, but the results were not satisfactory. In 1907, the mill was remodeled and Macquisten tubes employed for concentration, but operations were again suspended in 1910. The Yerington Mountain Copper Co. purchased the Adelaide Mine in 1916.

From 1908-1920, the district produced 23,583 tons of ore, containing $75,364 in gold, 65,206 ozs. of silver, 812,841 lbs. of copper, 297,883 lbs. of lead, and 1,700 lbs. of zinc, valued in all at $349,942, according to Mineral Resources, U.S. Geol. Survey
In the 1970's Conoco Oil Co. purchased the mine and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in geo-physical work (records at the Bureau of Mines).
