The Shirley Bar claims are located primarily on terrace gravels on the northern side of the Baker Creek valley. Three bedrock reverse/thrust faults dipping NNW have been mapped in the region, including one below the terrace gravels –none is directly observed at North Star. These faults are probably early Tertiary in age, and have displaced Cretaceous terranes that have been successively accreted to the Alaska basement by the northward subduction of the Pacific Plate.

The Shirley Bar Bench is famous for producing sizable gold nuggets. In the period between 1901 and 1904, it is estimated that more than 1,000 miners panned on Glen Creek and Rhode Island Creek using simple hand-mining methods. After 1904, mining was recorded in 1931, 1937-1938, and again in 1951 (Williams, 1951). Minor activity was recorded in the area after 1951 with workings in 1962, 1967 and 1968. Thurman Oil and Mining owned the property and mined from 1994 until the property was sold to Goldstream Mining in 2000. Minimal activity took place from 2000-2009. The Dobson family acquired the claims in 2009 and did a small family operation until we, acquired the claims from them in 2016.
