Kenema region, Sierra Leone, adjacent to sealed roads

The Kambui Schist Belt includes amphibolites and hornblende schist, biotite gneiss and biotite schist, and a variety of other high-grade gneisses. These rocks are derived from mafic igneous rocks including basaltic and andesitic lavas with thin tuff bands and intercalated argillaceous sediments and occasional, impersistent ferruginous bands. Intrusive ultramafic rocks are recognised, as are late kinematic pegmatitic and aplitic veins. The contact zones between the schist belt and the enveloping quartzo-feldspathic gneisses are ‘gradational’ and likely to be tectonised. Syn-kinematic granite intrusions are inferred and the pegmatites in the region are associated with these. No post or late kinematic granite intrusions have been recognised.
