Gold miner Newcrest Mining has restarted production at Cadia East’s Panel Cave 1 (PC1), in New South Wales, with production rates at the mine expected to be fully restored by the end of March next year.

Canada’s Trade Minister flagged “troublesome” permit delays for Eldorado Gold in a letter to the Greek Minister of Mines and Energy earlier this year, Francois-Philippe Champagne told Reuters on Wednesday.
After meeting with the company at the Toronto mining conference in March, Champagne wrote to say that Canadian companies expect to be treated fairly and Eldorado has done “everything it can in order to comply with local laws and regulations.”

Canadian gold producer Eldorado Gold has confirmed on Wednesday that it has received the Olympias operating permit and the modified electromechanical installation permit for the tailings management facility at Kokkinolakkas, from the Greek Ministry of Energy and Environment.
The permits were issued in the wake of mounting pressure on the Greek government to expedite permit approvals for the Kassandra mines, which include Skouries, Olympias projects, as well as the operating Stratoni mine, in Halkidiki.

Junior metals developer Platina Resources has reported a maiden ore reserve of 3.9-million tonnes at its Owendale scandium-cobalt project, in New South Wales.

Grading at 550 parts per million (ppm) of scandium, 0.9% cobalt and 0.13% nickel, the project is estimated to host a reserve of 3 359 t of Scandia, 3 510 t of cobalt and 5 157 t of nickel, making it the highest-grade scandium and cobalt development discovered.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has served diversified miner Exxaro Resources with a notice to embark on a protected strike at the Grootegeluk mine, in Lephalale, Limpopo, and at the Leeuwpan mine, in Delmas, Mpumalanga.   The NUM submitted wage demands on April 13 and accuses Exxaro of failing to resolve the wage dispute.   “The union demands a wage increase of 10%, a service increment of 0.5%, housing increase of 10% or R5 000, a standby allowance of 10%, family responsibility leave of eight days, and a long-service award for 15 years of one Krugerrand,” NUM deputy general secretary William Mabapa said in a statement.
