The principal bedrock types in the Gold Crown Kemple Camp Mine area are pre-Cambrian supracrustal rocks of amphibolite, quartzite and biotitic- and hematite-rich gneiss. They contain a diverse mixture of textures that are typically porphyroblastic. These rocks are very hard and dense with little to no permeability.

Relic bedding suggests a near-shore facies. Hematite is probably morphed from magnetitie-rich sediments and indicates a wave-concentrated assemblage. Gold is often associated with these deposits, such as is found today in Nome, Alaska..........

Gold was discovered in the Northern Black Mountains in the 1600's with the arrival of the Spaniards. Some of their workings can still be seen today. Most of the work was done, however, beginning in the 1865 and continuing up until World War II.
