64 miles outside of Lordsburg. The trail to the mine consisted of three (3) miles of old, forgotten roads that probably haven’t been driven in 20 or more years. Surprisingly the roads were in good repair with the exception of the sage overgrowth. To get to the rough road, its three (3) additional miles of easy more traveled 4WD road to pavement. There are some flat areas below the claim to park trucks and equipment with care. The old road to the claim had washed out near the old mill at the mine. From the mill, the survey team hiked 1,000 feet to the mine entrances.

The teams noted a lot of very rich silver and some quartz with minimal amounts of visible gold. They also defined green and purple versions of highly fluorescent fluorite in the lower sections of the stoping. The surveyors noted small ore buckets on the claim and some gold screens. These are synonymous with high grade gold mining and or gem mining. As remote as you will find. The claim and the district have all but been forgotten with the larger mining companies working the areas around Lordsburg. The claim is a full 20 acres of history, and minerals that have been left largely as they were in the 1950s when the mine shut down. No one will sneak up on you as the land is flat off both sides of the hill and you can see for miles in any direction. Temperatures will get warm in the summer, but are ideal in spring, fall and winter. The weather allows for the operation to run year round with very little problems from rain, snow or other inclement weather.

In the Red Hill mine a northwest-trending oxidized lead-silver vein cuts altered Tertiary quartz latite ash-flow tuff. The vein strikes N77 degrees W, dips 75-85 degrees NE, and consists mainly of cerussite, minor anglesite, and a small amount of residual galena, locally argentiferous. Malachite, chrysocolla, smithsonite, sphalerite, and wulfenite are also found. Quartz and calcite are gangue minerals, with minor fluorite.

The Red Hill lead-silver mine was sporadically active from the turn of the century to 1950. Records are incomplete, but 3,746 tons shipped between 1908 and 1950 yielded 1,019,500 pounds of lead and 14,249 ounces of silver, valued at $82,414. Total production must be around $100,000.
