The Kookynie tenement, is located 2.5 kilometers east of the rural town of Kookynie. Access to the tenement is available from Kookynie, via the Kookynie Yarri Road, which passes through the south of the project. The rest of the tenement area is accessible via four wheeled drive using stock/station tracks.

The Puzzle Project forms part of Kookynie Resources’ larger Kookynie Project and lies within the central Norseman-Wiluna belt of the Eastern Goldfields Province of the Archaean Yilgam Craton, Western Australia (Griffin, 1990). The Puzzle Project is on the Melita 1:100,000 map sheet and is broadly centred on the historical town site of Kookynie. The project area is between two major regional shears the Mount George 15 km west and the Keith Kilkenny 40 km east and occurs in Mehta metasediments (part of the Melita greenstone suite comprised of a bimodal rhyolite-basalt association and several dolerite sills and dykes), and biotite monzogranite. The interpreted depositional setting for the greenstone association on Mehta is the margin of a large rift basin represented by the Kalgoorlie Terrane, and greenstones are assigned to the Gindalbie Terrane.

Barley et al. (1989) divided the Norseman-Wiluna belt into two broad tectono-stratigraphic associations. The Kalgoorlie Terrane forms part of a western association, which is interpreted, as a marginal basin, bounded to the east by the Keith-Kilkenny Fault. An association containing several andesitic volcanic centres, east of the Keith-Kilkenny Fault, is interpreted as a volcanic arc. The MELITA greenstones occur within the marginal basin association near the eastern boundary with the volcanic arc associatioa.

Hallberg (1986) recognised four geological subdivisions (geological sectors and tectonic zones) within the Leonora-Laverton area based on lithological and structural characteristics. Geological sectors were classified as stratigraphically and structurally relatively simple, and characterised by calc-alkaline magmatism. Tectonic zones were classified as structurally and stratigraphically more complex, and contained evidence of peralkaline magmatism. The MELITA greenstones lie within the western-most subdivision of Hallberg (1986), the Keith-Kilkenny tectonic zone.
