The historic Nakaye Mine produced as much as twenty million dollars worth of fluorite prior to WWII for flux other scientific uses. By 1951 the mine had been largely abandoned and would have remained so if not for the copper deposit that is reported to sit under the fluorite. By the mid 1950s, the use for fluorite as a scientific tool was replaced by synthetics and the demand vanished nearly overnight. The Nakaye Mine was left with thousands of tons of mined reserves in addition to 30,000 tons of mid-grade fluorite material. The fluorite at the Nakaye comes in a limited array of colors. Greens, from dark and opaque to a light, luminescent mint hue. Blues and purples are common and range from a deep, violet color to a translucent aqua shade. There are some yellow colorations but they are not as abundant as the greens and blues. The road to the Nakaye is a rough, high clearance 4wd only. There are numerous areas of loose rock and boulders that may require locking differentials to access. There are also a few narrow sections of shelf roads with steep drop offs. Despite the few challenges, the road is overall in decent condition and passable by most high clearance 4wd in dry conditions. The value in the Nakaye property lies in two different minerals. The first is the fluorite. Fluorite is increasingly used as a gem, being cut for jewelry. It is also used by many as a healing sort of crystal that is thought to increase metabolic rates and lucidity. The fluorite here is a very high grade for these uses and there is substantial quantity to last many decades. This type of fluorite is also sold as a raw mineral at many rock and gem shows where is can command up to $20 per pound for uncut material. The second mineral reported on the property is a large body of porphyry copper positioned below the Nakaye fault formation. This deposit is logical through the copper values that can be seen in lower levels of the mining operation as well as the placer gold deposits in the gulches below the mine. Placer gold has been recovered from the many gulches in the area for many years. However, the recoveries are small and insignificant in comparison with the actual mining activities above. A full drilling program would be required to define the size, width and thickness of the copper deposit, however it is estimated to be over 1 mile in general circumference. The development of the Nakaye property could then lead in two directions. Either towards a small, high quality gem operation, or towards a large commercial copper deposit development. The mine workings are largely accessible but are in a state of disrepair since they have not been maintained in over 70 years. It is not recommended to enter any of the workings unless you trained and enter with proper equipment and protocols. A series of short drifts and prospects are cut throughout the property. Many of these open into large fluorite lenses where material can be cut from the walls or is already stacked and awaiting shipment. There are some adits with a good bit of development. The largest of which was measured at 910', cuts through several large fluorite deposits and then chases along a large body of multicolored fluorite. The face is a thick body of dark purple fluorite. Permits and bonding will be required for any sort of mining activity. Small scale excavations that are minimally intrusive will require very little.
