Summary

The Dickie Springs claims cover some of the richest ground in one of the largest undeveloped placer gold deposits in the lower 48 states. Geologists with the USGS estimated the entire deposit may contain as much as 28 million ounces. These claims were acquired to possess the highest grade areas. The property size is 320 acres and in four claim groups. The economic part of the DS deposit is estimated to “average 0.039 oz/yd gold, with some local areas of gravel running from as high as 0.73 oz/yd to as low as 0.003 oz/yd gold”.

Location and Access

The claims are located in Fremont County, Wyoming approximately 40 miles south of Lander.
There is direct road access to three of the four claim groups and the fourth is within 1/8 of a mile of a road with legal access.

Geology

The principle gold deposits are Eocene-age placer gold within thick conglomerates of the Wasatch Formation. Additionally the gulch material has been enriched through gravity in the alluvial deposits Dickie Springs Gulch and the other unnamed gulches on the claims. We have found gold even in sampling the surface of hillsides.
Green (1896) estimated that 5,843 acres of the placer deposits average 0.039 oz/yd gold, with some local areas of gravel running from as high as 0.73 oz/yd' to as low as 0.003 oz/yd gold. The gold is relatively coarse, and many flakes average 0.2 inch in diameter (Love and others, 1978).

History

Placer gold was discovered at Dickie Springs in 1863 but due to numerous hostile encounters with Indians not much mining was done until the 1890s when “each man was earning from $6 to $8 per diem (with gold at approximately $20/oz), and this in face of the fact that the gravel was screened and hauled 3 miles to water." During the Great Depression some small scale mining was done in the Spring when water was available. In modern times a couple of small scale operations have operated on nearby claims.
In the 1970s a group of USGS geologists lead by the well known Wyoming geologist J. D. Love carried out a study of the Dickie Springs placer gold deposit. They deemed to contain up to 28.5 million ounces making it one of the largest in the country.
