A pyroxenite sample collected by government geologists from a trench on the Trout Lakes Ni-Cu-Co occurrence along the eastern side of a large magnetic anomaly returned concentrations of 1163 ppm Ni, 461 ppm Cu and 273 ppm Co. The pyroxenite sample was mineralized with net-textured pyrrhotite. The current owner has collected samples that provided higher values in all elements.
Located on 4 claims (65HA) in the highlands of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. The area is remote, but accessible by most vehicles to within 1 kilometre of the prospect.
Anomalous Ni-Cu-Co values are associated with ultramafic rocks in the Cape Breton Highlands. Net textured pyrrhotite found in outcrop has been determined to have pentlandite, chalcopyrite and cobaltite. Similarly anomalous values occur in area soil and stream sediment surveys.
Gabbro, Norite and peridotite intrusive rocks bearing anomalous Ni-Cu-Co values occur on the periphery of a very large magnetic anomaly.
Recorded exploration interest in the Trout Lakes area began with airborne magnetic anomalies detected by Canadian Aero Surveys for Cape Breton Metals and Mineral Exploration in 1957. This was followed by ground checking of the area in 1959 by Mineral Exploration Corp. Ltd. who postulated that a strongly pyrrhotite mineralized nickel bearing occurrence hosted by “an area of norite intrusive”. A magnetic concentrate of this norite material is reported to have a nickel content of about 2 lbs/ton Ni concentrate. In 1961, ground EM and a magnetometer survey were completed by Prospector Airways Limited. Three trenches were reported as well as five packsack drill holes that reached a maximum of 10 metres. The holes were reported to be shut down early in mineralized rock due to poor core recovery and holes collapsing. The geophysics confirmed a strong conductor over 250 metres in length. In 1966 ACA Howe had another EM and magnetometer survey flown which was followed by ground geophysics which confirmed a 305 metre long EM anomaly and a 460 metre long magnetic anomaly still open to the south.
In 1989 Scotia Prime Resources Inc. conducted ground EM and magnetometer surveys, humus geochemical, geological mapping and prospecting surveys of this area. The occurrence was described in this report (Miller and Reeves, 1989) as follows: "In general, the geophysical surveys identified two distinct geologic areas characterized by high magnetism on the west side of the claim group and relatively low magnetism on the east side. The boundary between the two is characterized by a northeast-southwest trending zone of high conductivity whose position coincides with the location of the major fault noted on the provincial geology map.”
In regard to the Trout Lakes area specifically, Miller and Reeves summed up the results as follows: “The eastern area of the claim block, characterized by a relatively low magnetic response, is underlain by gneissic rocks. The western area with a higher magnetic response is considered to be representative of more mafic rocks. In the area of Jovette and Beverley Lakes, a sharp isolated magnetic high has been delineated within the region of low magnetism near or within the boundary fault zone. "
In 1986, INCO Ltd, as part of a due diligence effort in a sub-option from Scotia Prime Resources, trenched the eastern edge of the airborne anomaly at the northwest corner of Jovette Lake. The author could not locate a report of this work but sampling by G. DeMont of DNR in 1994 produced anomalous values in numerous elements and 1163 ppm for nickel. The field check at this time also verified that rock types in the area include gabbro, norite and peridotite as indicated in the efforts of previous companies. Sampling by the author returned values of 1380 ppm Ni, 797 ppm Cu and 375 ppm Co.
In 1996, Regal Goldfields Limited had conducted grid-geological mapping, electromagnetic, magnetometer and prospecting surveys over the Trout Lakes area. The magnetometer survey outlined a discrete north to north-west trending magnetic anomaly between Beverly and Jovette Lakes. The anomaly, which is 750 m long and up
to 200 m wide, is reported to coincide with the outline of a gabbro intrusion identified in the grid mapping survey. The electromagnetic survey outlined three principal, north-
south trending conductors. Two of the conductors were reported to occur along the gabbro contacts, while the third conductor was reported to coincide with the nickel mineralization exposed in the Inco trench described above.
Despite follow-up drilling recommended by most of the reports filed on this property, excluding the packsack drilling, no drilling was carried out.
Two world class Ni deposits, Alexo near Timmons and Kambalda in Australia, both exhibit a zone of low grade, net-textured ore overlying massive ore zones in peridotite and serve as excellent exploration models for an exploration program at Trout Lakes.
